New York, N.Y. (Jan. 29, 2015) – We poke holes in them, and we hang weighty objects from them. But, how much do we really know about our earlobes. Leading New York dermatologist, Dr. Barney Kenet, points out that healthy,
well-shaped earlobes can help enhance a youthful
appearance.
While the cartilage-rich upper part of the ear
remains unchanged as the years go by, the lobes can flatten and sag, according to Dr. Kenet. “Loss of collagen and sun damage ages the earlobe, and in turn, ages the overall face,” says Dr. Kenet. Besides aging,
earlobes are especially vulnerable to
injury, including torn earlobes and stretched-out piercing sites.
“Ear piercing has been around for centuries and earrings are one of the most common forms of jewelry. A few simple steps can help prevent infection, allergic reactions and torn earlobes and help ensure that your beautiful earrings are properly set off by your beautiful earlobes,“ says Dr. Kenet.
Dr. Kenet offers the following seven tips for beautiful earrings … beautiful ears:
1. Be particular about where and how you get your ears pierced. See a professional rather than having them pierced by a friend in your bedroom. Make sure the holes are symmetrical. Select simple, small 14K gold earrings and wear them continuously until your ears are healed -- about four to six weeks.
2. Avoid earrings containing nickel. Allergic reactions to nickel are very common. Try to stick with gold or silver earrings. At least, make sure the post of the earring is gold or silver.
3. Be careful when removing scarfs, sweaters and other clothing so that earrings don’t get snagged. Remove earrings before showering, and washing your hair. Remove earrings before a long flight and secure them in a safe place.
4. Avoid hoops and hanging earrings when taking care of small children. Babies and toddlers can’t resist yanking on dangling shiny
earrings.
5. Don’t wear heavy earrings all day or while sleeping. Consider clip earrings rather than pierced for larger pieces. Some earrings can be converted from pierced to clip rather easily.
6. Avoid pressing your phone against your ears. Doing so may damage the earlobe over time. Keep your ear-bud wires away from you earrings.
7. Assess your earlobe. Earlobes are made of fatty tissue. And, unfortunately, like some other body parts, they tend to droop and flatten as we age. A simple, non-surgical procedure can rejuvenate and enhance the earlobe resulting in a more youthful appearance.
If, despite taking precautions, you do get a torn earlobe, it can be repaired with a minor surgical procedure in the doctor’s office.
Dr. Kenet says, “Torn earlobes can be reconstructed and the integrity of the earlobe enhanced so that pierced earrings are still an option. But, I always advise that patients be careful with heavy earrings”. “Let’s face it,” he adds, “We all want to maintain a youthful appearance, taking care of your earlobes is an important part of achieving that goal.“
